The Venue

Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. Settled in the 1840s, it sits at the foot of Mount Remarkable, named by Edward John Eyre because of the “lofty way in which it towered above the surrounding hills”.

Close to Adelaide (it can be a day trip), Mount Remarkable National Park is an ideal place to take the family.

There’s lots of diverse wildlife and campgrounds with great facilities. The park is a popular destination for bushwalking, with trails for all ages and abilities.

There are some incredible views to be had – the 960m high Mount Remarkable Summit presides over the Willochra Plain and looks over the Spencer Gulf. On a clear day you will be able to see other peaks over 150km away!

The Event

This year the King of the Mount race will take participants over the summit of Mt Remarkable and back down to Melrose.

Run (or walk) from the Melrose caravan park campgrounds along the newly built trail to the summit of Mt Remarkable. Pace yourself - it's 14 KM with over 560 M of vertical ascent!

Generous cutoff times ensures that everyone has a chance to complete the summit experience making this an iconic and inclusive event that provides everyone from keen trail runners to family groups a fun day out!

All finishers will receive a medal and entrants will be fully supported by multiple aid stations with hydration and running snacks.

Children 13 and under are required to run with a registered adult participant. No ID is required, and there are no limits on the number of children that can accompany a single participant.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is no public transport available in the district. Car pooling is recommended, and there is plenty of free parking in the main street of Melrose.

What can I bring into the event?

We supply aid stations with water, lollies, chips, and fruits, and hearty soup. We would like to minimise waste, so we ask you to bring your own hydration bottles or packs. These can be refilled at any of the aid stations free of charge.

We also recommend all entrants to be carrying space blankets, as well as having access to a running jacket and gloves to ensure that you stay warm if the weather becomes cold.
